Homemade Bone Broth

To bone broth or not to bone broth? That should never be the question!

Drinking bone broth has become a new-ish health craze but bone broth has been used for its gut healing, immune boosting properties for many, many years. For the sake of saving space & time, here’s a great article & break down from Dr. Axe explaining the main health benefits of consuming bone broth on a regular basis.

ALSO, it’s incredibly easy to make yourself and is great way to use up kitchen scraps, minimizing food waste. I save my chicken OR turkey carcasses/bones and veggie scraps from previously cooked meals i.e. celery & carrot ends, onion scraps, garlic scraps and herbs. I store them in the freezer in a Stasher Bag to collect and use on a future day when I am ready to make some. But no worries if you don’t have scraps and still want to make this liquid gold! Here is what you need and how to do it:

Prep time: 5 minutes

Cook time: 6 hours minimum, best for 24+ hours

Ingredients:

  • 1 organic, pasture raised chicken OR turkey carcass/bones

  • 1 onion, quartered

  • 4 cloves of garlic, skins removed

  • 2-3 whole carrots

  • multiple stalks of celery, leaves and all

  • 2 tbsp. apple cider vinegar

  • 1 tbsp. turmeric

  • 5-6 peppercorns

  • 1 bay leaf

  • fresh squeezed lemon, half or whole

Instructions⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

  1. In a large pot or crock pot, add frozen carcass and fill with water just barely covering it

  2. add in all remaining ingredients above

  3. bring it all to a boil, lower heat to a simmer, cover and cook for 6+ hours (the longer the better, I do 24-36 hours on my stove top. Obviously you can also use your crockpot if you’re more comfortable with that).

  4. with a fine strainer, strain liquid into a pitcher and discard everything remaining.

  5. let the bone broth cool and pour into mason jars for storage, filling 3/4 of the way up to leave room for expansion when it freezes.

*It will last a week in the fridge (unfrozen) or up to a year frozen!

Drink a warm cup if you’re feeling under the weather for a major immune boost, use it for any soup broth, use it to deglaze you pan while making a stir-fry or hash, add to your mashed potatoes…the options are endless, as well as the health benefits!

Hope you enjoy!
